Connor Prielipp is 4.03 ERA and 4.32 FIP — numbers that sit close enough together to say he has been getting results in line with his actual performance. He is not a pitcher running above or below his level; he is a pitcher working at an average mid-rotation level. His last three FIPs of 4.48 show a slight recent softening. Byron Buxton and Josh Bell give Minnesota the most dangerous bats in the order, and the Twins carry a lineup capable of doing damage when the pitching gives them a foothold.
Davis Martin is 1.51 ERA and 3.52 FIP. His ERA has been running two full runs ahead of where his underlying contact numbers say it should be. Strand rates, sequencing, and defense have been keeping the surface result looking far cleaner than the process deserves. That is the honest flag on this game.
The flag does not change the pick. Martin's 3.52 FIP is still better than Prielipp's 4.32, and the White Sox are at home with a lineup that has Munetaka Murakami at its core. Even if Martin pitches to his FIP tonight rather than his ERA, Chicago is the better-positioned team. Rate Field gives them the home environment, and a 0.80-run FIP edge, however imperfect, it is still an edge.
Martin's 1.51 ERA is going to draw skepticism and the 3.52 FIP is why. But a 3.52 FIP beats a 4.32 FIP at home at near-even money. The White Sox are the right side here even in the scenario where Martin regresses toward his FIP tonight. Home field, the better arm by the number that strips out luck, and the deeper lineup.
