Ryan Weathers was the Yankees' biggest acquisition this offseason as they concentrated on retaining Cody Bellinger. Weathers, the son of former Yankee David Weathers, was the Padres' 7th overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft. He has yet to establish himself as an MLB starter.
During spring training, he made 5 appearances (4 starts), allowed 27 hits and 17 earned runs in 17.1 innings. He allowed 4 homers, walked 4, and struck out 21.
New York had an excellent opening series against the Giants, winning all 3 games in a sweep.
Aaron Judge had 2 homers in the series. Giancarlo Stanton is blazing hot at 6 for 12 with a home run, and a 1.250 OPS.
Against Luis Castillo, Bellinger is batting .227 with a .625 OPS in 22 at-bats. Paul Goldschmidt has 3 homers in 43 at-bats. Judge is batting .400 in 10 at-bats with a homer. Amed Rosario and Stanton have also homered against Castillo.
Luis Castillo is the horse-type starter that every team needs. He is completely reliable and durable with the team being reasonably certain as to what it will get every season.
He has made at least 30 starts in each of his three full seasons as a Mariner. Last year, he had a 2.2 bWAR with a 3.54 ERA. He tossed 180.2 innings, allowed 168 hits, walked 46, and struck out 162. In the playoffs, he had a 3.24 ERA in 3 appearances during the M's run to the ALCS, losing in 7 games to the Blue Jays.
Star catcher Cal Raleigh has gotten off to a slow start at the plate, going 1 for 11 in the opening series against the Guardians with 9 strikeouts. Newcome Brendan Donovan is batting .364 with a homer. Luke Raley is 3 for 9 with 3 homers. Dominic Canzone is at .286 with 2 homers. Julio Rodriguez is batting .091.
Only three Mariners have experience against Weathers. Josh Naylor is 1 for 2 with 2 RBI. Raley is 0 for 3. Victor Robles is 0 for 2.
The Yankees burst out of the gate in San Francisco with 3 straight wins. Seattle struggled in 2 of the 3 games against Cleveland. But this matchup is about pitching. The M's pretty much know what they'll get out of Castillo. The Yankees have no clue how Weathers will adapt to being a Yankee. The spring was worrisome.
The Mariners' struggling bats will bust out against Weathers and hand the Yankees their first loss of the season.
