Learn How to Read English Premier League Odds

The English Premier League odds can be exhibited in three different ways:

Every bettor should know to read all three because his options are much wider. You might stumble upon some great offers that you wouldn’t be aware of without knowing how to read all of them.

American Odds

The American way of presenting the English Premier League odds is also called moneyline.

Here, we have the odds displayed as positive or negative numbers, and that immediately tells us who is the favorite and who isn’t. Those outcomes with a negative moneyline are more likely to occur, and those with a positive one have fewer chances.

They are also showing us two things:

  • If there is a plus before the number, that’s how much we are going to earn when placing a $100 bet.
  • If there is a minus, it shows how much we need to stake to earn $100.

Here is an example:

Bet OnMoneyline/ American Betting Odds
Liverpool-150
Draw+250
Manchester United+280

When reading the odds, we see that the Reds are favorites (-150) and that seeing a draw (+250) is slightly more likely than United’s victory (+280).

  • If you bet on Liverpool’s victory, you will need to stake $150 to earn $100, with them being favorites and having odds displayed with a negative number.
  • Successful EPL betting on a draw would earn $250 on $100 invested.
  • If you bet on Manchester United to win, you will win $280 if you bet $100.

Decimal Odds

These odds are the most frequent on the international level and, in most countries of the world, present the dominant way of expression. They are very easy to understand, and even if you haven’t encountered them until now, understanding how they work won’t be a problem.

Here’s an example:

Bet OnDecimal Betting Odds
Brighton and Hove3.25
Draw3.50
West Ham2.20

The Hammers are favorites here, with them having the lowest decimal number presenting the odds. That number can’t be lower than 1. The closer it gets, the bigger the favorite the team is.

Here is how to calculate the winnings using decimal odds, with the bet being $100.

If you bet on Brighton and they win, you’ll get back 3.25 x $100, which is $325.

This is a total sum, not your profit. You will get that when you deduct the initial $100 from the winnings: $325 – $100 = $225.

So $225 is your profit.

Fractional Odds

The fractional odds are dominant in the United Kingdom. Bookmakers located in these countries use them all the time, so you should know how to read them.

Here is one example:

Bet OnFractional Betting Odds
Manchester City1/5
Draw3/1
Wolves9/2
  • Fractions in which the first number (numerator) is smaller than the second (denominator), like with Man City, display odds that are more likely to occur, usually showing the favorite.
  • In cases when the numerator is bigger than the denominator, the situation is the opposite. Here, the Wolves are 9/2 to win, and they are clearly the underdogs.

Calculating the profits when having fractional odds isn’t tough. You multiply the bet with the numerator and divide that sum with the denominator.

Here is an example:

  • If the bet on Manchester City’s victory is $100, here is the formula for calculating the profits. (1/5)

($100x1)/5= $100/5= $20

  • Here is for Wolves’ triumph. (9/2)

($100x9)/2 = $900/2 = $450

Just to remind you, this is a clear profit. There is no need for any deductions like with the decimal odds.

EPL Betting Tips

If you’re interested in betting on the English Premier League (EPL), there are a few things you should keep in mind. Here are some EPL betting tips that can help you:

  • Analyze team form: Assess teams’ recent performances, including home and away records, winning streaks, and recent results against similar opposition.
  • Consider head-to-head statistics: Review historical matchups between teams, including previous results, goal differentials, and trends in performance.
  • Evaluate player form: Pay attention to individual player performances, including goal-scoring records, assists, defensive contributions, and any recent injuries or suspensions.
  • Stay informed on team news: Keep up to date with the latest news regarding injuries, suspensions, and managerial changes, as these can significantly impact match outcomes.
  • Explore different betting markets: Diversify your bets by exploring alternative markets such as over/under goals, Asian handicaps, both teams to score, and halftime/fulltime results.
  • Set a budget and stick to it: Establish a betting budget and adhere to responsible gambling practices to avoid excessive losses.
  • Shop for the best odds: Compare odds offered by different bookmakers to ensure you get the best value for your bets.
  • Avoid emotional betting: Bet based on objective analysis rather than personal bias or fandom to make rational decisions.
  • Practice bankroll management: Manage your bankroll wisely by staking only a small percentage of your total betting funds on each wager.
  • Keep track of your bets: Maintain a record of your betting activity to analyze your performance, identify trends, and learn from both wins and losses.

By following these EPL betting tips, you can increase your chances of making informed decisions and maximizing your potential returns.
