One of the games on Friday’s WNBA slate features the Phoenix Mercury hosting the New York Liberty. Can Phoenix make it six straight in our Mercury vs Liberty pick?
Phoenix Hopes To Stay Hot Against Defending Champs
The Mercury suffered an 88-77 defeat at the hands of the Seattle Storm back on Jun. 7. Since that setback, Phoenix has reeled off six straight wins. This includes a 107-86 victory against the Chicago Sky on Jun. 21.
The Mercury’s offense featured six players who reached double figures. Sami Whitcomb scored a team-high 17 points off the bench and knocked down five 3-pointers. Kahleah Copper added 16 points and five steals, while Satou Sabally contributed 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.
Phoenix jumped out to a 31-18 lead after the first quarter. It increased its lead to an insurmountable 34-point advantage heading into the final frame. Chicago won the scoring battle 28-15, but it was not nearly enough to prevent the Mercury from winning their fifth straight contest.
Liberty Look To Avenge Early-Season Loss Against Mercury
After defeating the Sky 85-66 on Jun. 10, New York dropped three of its next four games. Fortnately, the defending champs ended a two-game skid with an 81-78 victory over the Golden State Valkyries on Wednesday night.
Breanna Stewart was one of four players who registered double-digit scoring totals. She led the way with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks.
Kennedy Burke was solid off the bench, finishing with 20 points and five rebounds while connecting on four of her nine attempts from beyond the arc.
Kate Martin scored six straight points to give the Valkyries a three-point lead at the 1:59 mark. However, thanks to several clutch free throws from Sabrina Ionescu and a pair of missed 3-pointers by Martin and Kayla Thornton, the Liberty held on for a three-point victory.
Mercury vs Liberty WNBA Pick
Phoenix comes in at the No. 6 spot in points per game and boasts the fourth-best scoring defense. On the other side, New York leads the league in offensive rating and ranks second in defensive efficiency.
While the Mercury won the previous meeting between these ball clubs earlier this month, the Liberty hold a 3-2 edge in the previous five matchups. With that in mind, look for New York to emerge victorious in what should be an entertaining battle.
