A first competitive meeting between Borges and Paul will be staged in the second round of the US Open on Thursday.

Match Preview

Tommy Paul has enjoyed an excellent season on the ATP Tour, reaching the quarterfinals at both the Australian Open and French Open. However, he will have a different level of pressure on his head at his home Grand Slam, as he bids to reach the third round of the US Open for the fourth straight year.

The 14th seed encountered no issues in the opening round against Elmer Moller, as he cruised through in straight sets. Paul benefitted from Moller’s inability to serve efficiently, as the Dane recorded 12 double faults. The American also won 82% of the points on his first serve.

Nuno Borges should present a more difficult challenge on Thursday. The Portuguese player reached a career-best fourth round at the US Open last year, and has achieved career-best runs at both the French Open and Wimbledon already this calendar year.

The 28-year-old was clinical in the first round at Flushing Meadows, beating Brandon Holt in straight sets. Borges registered an impressive ten aces, and hit a staggering 98 winners. His aggression will need to be at the same level if he is to spring an upset this week.

Nuno Borges vs. Tommy Paul Picks

This is a closer match than the odds suggest, as Borges has been eye-catching on the ATP Tour throughout the season. Paul has been efficient himself in Grand Slam events, but a shock result could be a value betting angle on the basis of form this Thursday.
