Ronaldo, Fernandes, and Unfinished Business

Cristiano Ronaldo arrives at his sixth World Cup needing one goal to become Portugal's all-time leading scorer at the tournament outright. He has eight career World Cup goals across five tournaments. He is 41 years old and still training and preparing at a standard most players half his age cannot reach. Bruno Fernandes runs the creative engine from Manchester United, distributing and pressing with the composure of a player who has done this in Champions League football for years. Rafael Leão brings pace and directness from AC Milan on the left. Pedro Neto contributes from Chelsea on the right. Bernardo Silva provides the technical quality in tight spaces that Portugal need when defences sit deep.

Roberto Martínez has built a side that knows how to win ugly as much as how to play well. Portugal topped their European qualifying group, losing just once across eight matches. They beat Turkey and Hungary away from home in the same campaign. Against Uzbekistan, the expectation is control from the first whistle.

Cannavaro's Debutants

Uzbekistan are here for the first time, and their presence in North America is the story of one of football's more remarkable qualifying runs. Fabio Cannavaro, the 2006 Ballon d'Or winner, took over in October 2025 and immediately changed the team's mentality. Abduqodir Khusanov anchors the defence from Manchester City, where he has spent the season developing under Pep Guardiola. That gives Uzbekistan something no other debutant at this tournament has: a player with genuine elite club experience at the back.

The squad beyond Khusanov draws mostly from the Uzbekistan Super League and the Russian Premier League. Getting the ball from Khusanov to anyone capable of threatening Portugal's back line is the challenge. Cannavaro wants discipline and a low block, with pace on the counter through their forwards. Against Portugal's pressing system, that block needs to hold from the first minute to the last. For a debutant squad facing Ronaldo and Fernandes, that is a lot to ask.

Portugal vs. Uzbekistan Pick

Fernandes creates, Leão runs, and Ronaldo finishes. Uzbekistan's debutant squad has one elite player in Khusanov and a whole lot of hope elsewhere. Portugal are too complete in every position to be troubled here. We're backing Portugal -500.
