Fire Showing Early Signs of Playoff Promise

Plenty of positives can be drawn from the Chicago Fire’s start to the new MLS season, as the franchise sits fifth in the Eastern Conference, and within striking distance of the top of the standings. Confidence is likely to be high after winning back-to-back fixtures following a 2-1 home loss against D.C. United.

A sign of their excellent defensive ability was found in their recent win over Nashville, with Philip Zinckernagel scoring the winner inside the opening 60 seconds. The Fire defended resolutely, allowing just three shots on target.

United Failing to Put Together Solid Form

Atlanta United look set for another season outside of the playoff places based on their performance levels in the opening months of 2026. United have continued to struggle in offensive areas in their last two, taking just a single point and scoring once.

Last weekend’s defeat against Columbus was a sign of their attacking limitations, as United managed just a single goal from three shots on target. More will be expected of creative midfielder Miguel Almiron, who has registered three assists in six MLS appearances this season.

(4-3-3) Hoyos (GK); Jacob, Gregersen, Mihaj, Baez; Muyumba, Reilly, Alzate; Almiron, Latte Lath, Miranchuk
