San Diego have been the standout team in the Western Conference throughout 2025, and they could win the MLS Cup in their first campaign. They eased through to the semi-final stage after beating the Portland Timbers twice at home.
Meanwhile, Minnesota upset the odds in the opening round of the playoffs after holding their nerve in a penalty shootout against the Seattle Sounders. But, could they spring a second upset in the playoffs?

It has been a remarkable first season in the MLS for San Diego FC. Tyler Heaps has made the team an immediate force at the highest level, topping the Western Conference standings at the end of the regular season campaign after winning 19 of their 34 games.
Their spot in the semi-finals of the playoffs was assured following a Game Three win over the Portland Timbers on Nov 9. Andres Dreyer and Amahi Pellegrino both scored two goals apiece in the home win.
However, a notable concern would be their away record, winning just nine of their 19 matches.
Minnesota United are one of the sides that have been overlooked in the grand scheme of the playoffs this season.
Few expected them to overcome the Seattle Sounders in the opening round, but they held their nerve in two penalty shootouts. United showed their character in the Game Three win, as they were forced to play the entire second half with ten men.
However, the expansive counter-attack style almost saw them gain the victory inside 90 minutes. That character will make them a solid chance this weekend, but they will be up against it against one of the best teams in the Western Conference.

The previous meetings between these sides have been very competitive affairs, with ten goals scored across the two encounters.
