Competitive action from Group A at the Winter Olympics is set for Feb 13, as Canada collide with Switzerland at PalaItalia.
Canada will be widely expected to progress from Group A with maximum points, as they boast a deep squad brimming with NHL-quality players.
Switzerland will have pressure on their shoulders in the race for a qualifying spot, but it remains to be seen whether they have the quality to compete against one of the world’s best.
There is likely to be limited pressure on Canada this Friday, as the nation is expected to breeze through to the knockout round with little fuss.
Jon Cooper’s team have been a dominant force on the international schedule throughout history, winning a record nine Olympic titles and 28 World Championships.
Sidney Crosby will lead the Canadian team at the Games this winter. The experienced star has scored 25 goals and recorded 39 assists in 49 senior internationals.
There will be a fascinating fight for second in the Group A standings, but Switzerland should have an excellent chance based on their historical record.
The Swiss are one of the highest-ranked teams in the competition, holding an IIHF ranking of third in the world. Confidence within the camp should be high after winning silver at last year’s World Championships.
Nashville Predators star Roman Josi will be one of the team’s key players. The defenseman has played 74 times for Switzerland, recording 45 points.
