Cross-conference action in the NHL is set for Feb 5, as the Nashville Predators and Washington Capitals both chase a return to winning form before the mid-season break.
The Predators have shown flashes of their best form in recent weeks, winning four of their last ten. However, they come into this round following a defeat.
The Washington Capitals were also beaten in their most recent outing, and they have now dropped to a record of 4-5-1 across their last ten.

The Washington Capitals are becoming slightly inconsistent in the NHL, and that has seen them drop down to fifth in the Metropolitan Division.
Washington have gone 4-5-1 across their last ten, and they now have an overall record of 28-23-7 in the NHL this term.
The Caps have been largely reliable defensively, while their accumulation of 185 goals is the third-highest in the division. But, a return to winning form is required on Thursday after losing 4-2 on the road against the Philadelphia Flyers.

There is also likely to be increased pressure on the Nashville Predators on Thursday, as they dropped to fifth in the Central Division following a recent defeat.
The Preds have won four of their last ten, but they have also suffered three regulation time losses across the same period. But, confidence can be gained from their offensive record.
However, they have allowed an eye-watering 194 goals this season, which is the second-most in the Central Division.

The Predators have been defensively vulnerable throughout the season, and that could be the glaring trend worth following this week. Therefore, the Caps look like the standout play to record a home win before the start of the Winter Olympics.
