Houser Makes Giants Debut After Solid 2025
Adrian Houser takes the ball for his first start with San Francisco after signing a 2-year, $22 million deal in the offseason. The 33-year-old journeyman put together one of his best seasons in 2025, going 8-5 with a 3.31 ERA and 1.28 WHIP across 125 innings split between the White Sox and Rays.
The Giants' offense exploded for 9 runs on 15 hits Tuesday after scoring just 4 total runs in their first four games. Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, and Jung Hoo Lee all had multi-hit games in the blowout.
Pivetta Looks to Bounce Back at Home
Nick Pivetta gets the ball looking to erase his Opening Day nightmare against Detroit, where he allowed 6 earned runs in just 3 innings for an 18.00 ERA. The 33-year-old Canadian is coming off a career year in 2025, his first season with the Padres after leaving Boston. He went 13-5 with a 2.87 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 190 strikeouts across 181.2 innings, finishing 6th in NL Cy Young voting.
The Padres' lineup has been anemic through five games, batting just .182 with only 12 runs scored. Fernando Tatis Jr. is 0-for-4 to start the season, but has historically crushed sinkerball pitchers. Xander Bogaerts brings a .280 career average against similar righties. Jackson Merrill has driven in 4 of the team's 12 runs but the rest of the lineup is searching.
Giants vs Padres Pick
Pivetta's Opening Day disaster creates a value fade, but he's a proven commodity at Petco Park where he dominated with a 2.36 home ERA last season.
Pivetta averaged over 10 strikeouts per nine innings last year and is a quality pitcher. He will get a bounce-back opportunity in the pitcher-friendly confines where he thrived. The Padres are desperate to avoid a sweep and we expect them to come out with some juice. Our pick is San Diego -149.
