Race Preview

One of the potentially most informative races ahead of the Breeders’ Cup at the end of the season is set for Saratoga on Saturday, as a high-quality field of ten go to post for the G1 Spinaway Stakes. This race will see fillies aged two compete over a distance of seven furlongs.

Mythical will be a red-hot contender for the Jorge Delgado yard, as she bids to rack up a hat-trick at Saratoga. The two-year-old was excellent at the track over an extended six furlongs earlier this month, easily beating the reappearing Meringue by three lengths in the G3 Adirondack Stakes.

However, she is by no means the only runner in this race with a lofty reputation. Todd Pletcher-trained Tommy Jo is a daughter of Into Mischief, and also boasts previous winning form at Saratoga. The two-year-old put over three lengths between herself and Tennessee Belle when breaking her maiden at the track last month.

A number of other horses sport unbeaten records, including Ornellaia, Rileytone, and Spirit Doll. Steer Clear should be open to improvement for the Pletcher team after finishing second on her debut. Meringue, despite finishing second behind the market leader, should be capable of throwing down another notable challenge.

Spinaway Stakes Picks

Mythical holds rock solid claims this weekend. However, at the prices, we wouldn’t be put off taking a chance on Percy’s Bar, for Ben Colebrook. The two-year-old has won two-from-two on track, including last time out when landing the Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs. That race typically throws up a leading filly, and Percy’s Bar should be suited by this step up to seven furlongs.
