Race Preview
Monmouth Park’s biggest day on the calendar takes place this Saturday, as some of the leading three-year-old’s in the United States line up in the Haskell Stakes. Some legendary horses have passed through the New Jersey track on their way to making history, including Authentic, American Pharoah, and Rachel Alexandra.
This weekend’s race will see the return of Journalism, who has also finished second in each of the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes this year. The Michael McCarthy runner got his moment in the Triple Crown when beating Gosger by just under a length. He is the high-quality runner in this field, and is clear on ratings.
Gosger is the most closely matched to the Preakness winner after finishing a close second behind Journalism at Pimlico in May. Unlike his reappearing rival, Brendan Walsh’s charge has been kept fresh since that outing. Gosger looks like the biggest danger after having already beaten Bracket Buster impressively at Keeneland this year in the G3 Lexington Stakes.
Bob Baffert has a strong record in the Haskell, meaning that it would be unwise to rule out Goal Oriented this weekend. The three-year-old only managed fourth in the Preakness, but that was his first attempt at the top level after previously landing an optional claimer at Churchill Downs. There may still be more improvement to come.
Haskell Stakes Picks
Journalism is the class angle in the Haskell Stakes this year, and he is incredibly hard to bet against. Exacta players may be most interested in Burnham Square, who should come on from his second in the G3 Matt Winn Stakes last month at Churchill Downs.
