Event Preview

The middle jewel in the Filly Triple Crown is set for Friday, as the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes will be staged at Pimlico. However, the winner of the Kentucky Oaks last month will not be involved in Maryland this week, meaning that there is a wide-open feel to the race.

John Velazquez will be a popular jockey to follow this weekend, as he chases a record-extended sixth win in the race. He will be aboard Liam in the Dust. The three-year-old is yet to win since breaking her maiden, but she did produce an eye-catching effort over 1 1/16 miles at Keeneland last time out.

Reply is a respected runner for the Brittany Russell yard after finishing second in the Webster City Miss Stakes last time out. Amarth should also be a leading chance after finishing fifth in the G1 Ashland Stakes behind some runners that produced excellent efforts in the Kentucky Oaks.

Paris Lily and Kinzie Queen both come to Pimlico after impressive wins in allowance optional claimers last time out, but major improvements will be needed from both to feature on Friday. Runnin N Gunnin also has some solid form in the book after finishing third in the G3 Fantasy.

Black-Eyed Susan Stakes Picks

Brad Cox will be looking for further Classic success this weekend, and he holds an excellent chance in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes in the form of Margie’s Intention.

The three-year-old filly was a fine second in the Crescent City Oaks last time out, and she should relish this step up in trip. Holds some solid speed figures, and is drawn well to feature on Friday.
