Race Preview

A Saturday packed of Grade One action gets underway at Saratoga with the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes on August 23. This race will cover a total of seven furlongs, with horses aged three eligible to run. It has been a notable race in terms of runners who have competed in the sprint races later in the season.

Barnes is one of a number of chances for trainer Bob Baffert. The three-year-old was an excellent winner over seven furlongs at Santa Anita at the start of the year, before twice failing to beat Journalism over an extended mile. The drop back to seven furlongs is a clear positive.

Baffert also sends the unexposed Midland Money to Saratoga this Saturday, with Joel Rosario booked to take the ride. The three-year-old has won on both of his two career starts, and there could be further improvement on the cards this weekend.

Chad Brown has an excellent record in the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes, meaning that Chancer McPatrick deserves respect. The three-year-old has been inconsistent throughout the season, but he did bounce back to his best last time out when landing the Curlin Stakes over a mile and one furlong. The drop back to seven furlongs may not be ideal.

Patch Adams also deserves respect this weekend. The Brad Cox runner got the better of the reappearing Madaket Road over course and distance in June, putting two lengths between himself and his rival in the G1 Woody Stephens Stakes. Major player on the strength of that form.

H. Allen Jerkens Memorial Stakes Picks

The unexposed Verifire for trainer Brad Cox could be the outstanding chance this Saturday. The three-year-old has won three from three under rules, and is posting better speed figures with every run. A repeat of his win in the Maxfield Stakes at Churchill Downs puts him bang in the picture this Saturday.
