Race Preview

The stakes action in California gets underway with the G2 Del Mar Mile on Saturday. A talented field of eight will go to post for the race, with horses aged three and older competing on the turf to gain their share of the $300,000 purse.

Almendares could be an improving type for the D’Amato stable. The five-year-old was an impressive winner of the Wickerr Stakes at Del Mar on his last start, and has also held his own at the highest level this year after finishing a very respectable fourth in the G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile.

The hugely likable Cabo Spirit isn’t getting younger, but the six-year-old has held his form very well this year. Mike Smith takes the ride this weekend. The runner was second in the G2 Eddie Read last time out, and has run respectfully throughout the season, including a win in the G3 American Stakes.

Formidable Man also looks to have leading claims for the Michael McCarthy yard. The four-year-old has won twice from four starts in 2025, and posted a very solid figure when winning the G2 Eddie Read last month. Also has form over a couple of reappearing rivals after landing the G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile in March.

Flavien Prat has an excellent record in this race, and he could be worth following this weekend. King Of Gosford has won once from two starts this season, and was excellent on his latest start when landing the G1 Shoemaker Mile. Has form at Del Mar to his name after taking second in the G1 Hollywood Derby and winning the Let It Ride Stakes at the track in 2024.
