Race Preview

A place in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint will be up for grabs at Saratoga this Saturday, as the G1 Ballerina Stakes is staged in New York. Fillies aged three and older will be in action over seven furlongs, with a purse of $500,000 up for grabs.

A very competitive field will go to post, and Bob Baffert’s Hope Road is likely to be sent off as the favorite. The four-year-old has been consistent over the shorter distances since joining the Baffert yard, but she has been well-beaten despite finishing second on her last two efforts over the seven furlongs in graded company.

My Mane Squeeze comes out on top based on official ratings. The Michael Maker runner was an excellent winner over course and distance on her last start, beating Tricky Temper by over six lengths in the Johnstone Stakes. Is yet to prove herself in Grade One company, but this is a golden opportunity.

William Mott-trained Scylla has always threatened to be a major player at the top level, and she is still very lightly raced despite being a five-year-old. But, she will need to improve based on her previous effort when well-beaten by the reappearing Halina’s Forte in the G2 Honorable Miss Stakes.

Majestic Oops is a fascinating runner back down to seven furlongs this weekend. The Dan Ward runner ran an excellent race on her latest start when beaten just three lengths by the talented Randomized in the G3 Molly Pitcher.

Ballerina Stakes Picks

Despite giving weight away this weekend, Mystic Lake could still prove to be the most progressive runner in this field. It’s best to draw a line through her no-show in the G1 Derby City Distaff, but she is a winner over seven furlongs this year. The Saffie Joseph-trained runner has won on her last two starts, and has little to find on ratings to be the one to beat.
