Event Preview

The competitive action on the PGA Tour steps up a gear this weekend, as the first event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs is staged in Tennessee. The field will compete across a total distance of 7,244 yards to earn their share of the $20 million purse. Hideki Matsuyama was the shock winner of the event in 2024, and he could hold leading claims once again in 2025.

Unsurprisingly, Scottie Scheffler dominates the betting for the St. Jude Championship this weekend. The world number one has been at his dominant best once again throughout 2025, and he should be well-rested following his success at The Open Championship last month. Scheffler has solid form in the book at the course, finishing fourth last year.

However, it could also be challenging to dismiss the level of form that has been shown by Matt Fitzpatrick in recent months. He has finished in the top eight in each of the last four events, and has claimed T4 in two of the last three competitions. At TPC Southwind, he has finished in the top six on three occasions.

Xander Schauffele also deserves respect this weekend. He is yet to miss the Tour Championship since being a member on the PGA Tour, and his recent form reads very well on paper. That includes a T7 at The Open. Meanwhile, he finished as the runner-up at the St. Jude Championship 12 months ago.

St. Jude Championship Picks

Scheffler is a little too short in the betting to make me want to get involved this weekend. Therefore, the in-form Harris English could be an interesting angle. English landed a victory at the event in 2013, and has since finished in the top ten on two visits to TPC Southwind. This year, he has already finished as the runner-up at both The Open and the PGA Championship.
