Event Preview
The countdown for the third major of the season is well underway, but there will be a lucrative stop on the PGA Tour this weekend, as the Memorial Tournament is staged at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Ohio.
This weekend’s event is one of the most prestigious events on the annual PGA schedule, and some of the greats have claimed the top prize in the competition, which is worth $20 million. Tiger Woods is the most successful player, while former champions also include Jack Nicklaus, Kenny Perry, and Greg Norman.
Scottie Scheffler will be a hot favorite to become a multiple champion this year after holding off Collin Morikawa to win by a single shot in 2024. The recently crowned PGA Championship victor won the fifth of his nine titles in 2024 in this event. His incredibly high level of consistency was maintained last weekend after finishing in a tie for fourth at the Charles Schwab Challenge.
Collin Morikawa also deserves a lot of respect this weekend after pushing Scheffler to his limit at the Memorial Tournament 12 months ago. The American is slowly getting back to his very best, despite shooting a disappointing four-over at the Charles Schwab Challenge last weekend.
Shane Lowry could be an interesting contender at a bigger price to bounce back from his disappointing showing at the PGA Championship. The Irishman has achieved three top tens already this season.
Tommy Fleetwood is also worth consideration after an impressive performance last weekend. The Englishman has previously performed to a high standard at Muirfield.
Memorial Tournament Picks
Previous course form counts for a lot at the Memorial Tournament, meaning that Viktor Hovland makes some appeal. The 2023 champion has been in solid form throughout this year, and was the winner of the Valspar Championship in March.
Hovland also finished the PGA Championship shooting one-under in the final round earlier this month. His knowledge of the greens could make him an interesting selection at a big price this weekend.
