The intense action in Formula 1 returned with a dramatic edition of the Australian Grand Prix last weekend, with just 14 drivers completing the race distance in extremely wet conditions.

Lando Norris was the big winner of the day Down Under, but McLaren was denied a one-two finish after Oscar Piastri slid wide in the closing stages. An unpredictable start to the season also saw Aston Martin, Williams, and Kick Sauber picking up big points.

Event Preview

A thrilling start to the new Formula 1 season took place in Australia last Sunday, as Lando Norris put forward his claims to win the Drivers Championship with a masterful drive from the front in wet conditions. A sign of the struggles that many drivers endured was felt by the fact that only 14 runners completed the race.

Kimi Antonelli and Oliver Bearman were the only two rookies to take the chequered flag, with Isack Hadjar spinning out on the formation lap. It was also a debut to forget for Carlos Sainz in the Williams colors, as last year’s winner crashed out on the first lap.

Max Verstappen may not be in the fastest car this season, but he still finished within a second of Norris. There was a troubling start to life in the Red Bull for Liam Lawson, who crashed out in the closing stages.

It was also a difficult start to life in new colors for Lewis Hamilton, who fell victim to a questionable strategic decision by Ferrari to leave him and Charles Leclerc out on slicks when a second stint of rain arrived. As a result, neither driver finished inside the top seven.

As for Hamilton’s replacement, Antonelli was one of the stars of the day. The 18-year-old Italian finished fourth, and was just ten points off the lead. Overall, it was a positive day for Mercedes, with George Russell coming home in third.

The battle in the midfield looks tight already this season, with Alex Albon in the Williams showing excellent pace throughout the weekend to take fifth, ahead of Lance Stroll in the Aston Martin and Nico Hulkenberg in the Kick Sauber.

Chinese Grand Prix Picks

This weekend, the Chinese Grand Prix should be more race-able, with no rain forecast. However, that could suit Lando Norris’s McLaren more than the wet conditions in Australia.

A second straight win for the Brit would put his marker down for championship glory, but the pressure will be on the chasing pack to show that they have made strides to close the difference.
