Fight Preview

Galal Yafai has undoubtedly been one of the most eye-catching boxers to come out of the United Kingdom over the last 12 months. The Birmingham-born star has his sights set on world championship glory, and he could go a step closer toward a mega-money fight by successfully defending his WBC interim flyweight title in his home city on June 21.

There had always been high hopes for the 32-year-old, as he previously won the gold medal for Team GB at the 2020 Olympics. Soon after that achievement, he turned professional and won the WBC International flyweight title in his first fight against Carlos Vado Bautista.

Since then, he has been the dominant force, scoring knockout wins in seven of his nine professional bouts. A real coming of age performance was delivered last November, as he sensationally beat long-time rival Sunny Edwards with a blistering shot in the sixth round.

However, this showdown with Rodriguez Jr presents a significantly different challenge. The Mexican veteran has won 38 of his 45 professional bouts, and is a former unified mini flyweight world champion.

Rodriguez has won each of his last two fights, which includes a TKO finish against Jose Javier Torres last March. His credentials are clear to see after challenging for the WBO super-flyweight title in September 2021 against Kazuto Ioka, and narrowly missing out due to a unanimous decision loss in Tokyo.

Galal Yafai vs. Francisco Rodriguez Picks

There will be huge pressure on Yafai once again as he fights in front of his home fans, but he showed against Edwards last year that he is able to rise to the occasion.

We foresee another stunning performance by the Brit in Birmingham at the end of June to become the mandatory challenger to Kenshiro Teraji’s WBC flyweight title.
