Event Preview

Action on the PGA Tour heats up this weekend, as some of the world’s best players will be in action at The American Express. This event was previously known as the Desert Classic, and it is staged at La Quinta Country Club in California. The field will compete across 7,060 yards, with a lucrative purse of $9.2 million being up for grabs.

A dominant favorite will be available this weekend, as Scottie Scheffler is priced up at as short as +300. The American star is back on the PGA Tour following a hand injury, but his pressing claims are obvious. The top-ranked player was named Player of the Year for the fourth straight year in 2025, and he has finished in the top 25 on four from five starts at La Quinta.

Robert MacIntyre is another standout star that is well considering this weekend. The Scotsman ended the Sony Open like a man on a mission, eventually finishing T4. His consistency should be appreciated, as he has now finished in the top ten on his last four starts.

Ryan Gerard could be an interesting player at a bigger price this weekend. The American has already qualified for The Masters, and his confidence should be high after finishing in a solo second at the Sony Open last weekend. The 26-year-old is fast improving, and is likely to get involved in California.

The American Express Picks

Scheffler is too short for my liking this weekend. Instead, Christiaan Bezuidenhout could go under the radar. The South African has been consistent, finishing last year with four top 10 finishes in ten events. He holds solid form around this course, finishing T2 in 2024.
