Race Preview

The sporting eyes of the world may be on San Francisco this weekend, ahead of Super Bowl LX, but one of the other big betting events of 2026 is creeping into sight. However, a key prep ahead of the Kentucky Derby will be staged at Santa Anita this weekend, as the Robert B Lewis Stakes is staged.

Bob Baffert’s dominant record in the race ensures that he will hold the leading contenders, including current moneyline favorite Desert Gate. The three-year-old looks more suited to the mile trip than others this weekend, having been held over seven furlongs by talented stablemate Brant in September, and outstayed by Intrepido in the G1 American Pharoah.

Intrepido is a fascinating re-opposing contender, and it is easy to make a case that the Jeff Mullins runner will repeat that form. However, I have a strong sense that he will likely be better over slightly further. But, hard to ignore the fact that he has previous wins over Desert Gate and Plutarch.

The latter of those is very unlikely to reverse the form, having finished three lengths behind Intrepido over a mile. But, it could be worth noting that the three-year-old was excellent last time when beating a talented field by over four lengths.

The top three in the betting are the class angles this weekend, but the mile-trip could negatively impact Intrepido and Plutarch’s chances. Therefore, this weekend could be Desert Gate’s day, but the other two horses are notable on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
