Before Betting on Rangers vs Athletics July 22

Both the Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics already have some games under their belt as the majority of the MLB is just beginning the second half of their season on Friday. Texas picked up an 8-0 win in a one game set with Miami on Thursday, but now has to make the cross-country flight to the West Coast which could have them a bit jet-lagged.

Oakland already has played two games in the second half of their season, splitting a double-header at home with Detroit on Thursday 2-7 and 5-0. It’s going to be an interesting second half for the A’s, whose 33-62 record is the second worst in baseball behind only the 31-63 Nationals. Oakland will likely only get worse as they look to be major sellers at the trade deadline – if they have any trade chips left.

Texas (42-49) is 18 games back from the Astros in the AL West, but 7 down from the final wild card spot so they need to start piling some wins together. Spencer Howard (1-1, 6.97 ERA) will look to follow up Jon Gray’s stellar 6.0 IP of 0ER ball on Thursday. Howard’s only two decisions have come against Oakland this season, picking up a loss in 2.0 IP of relief back in April and getting his second career win with 5.0 IP of 1ER ball on July 11th.

Cole Irvin (3-7, 3.32 ERA) makes his third start of the season against Texas in the Rangers vs Athletics July 22 matchup. The left-hander threw 5.0 IP and allowed just 1 hit on April 24th in a 2-0 A’s win and gave up just 2 ER over 6.1 IP before the bullpen imploded in an 8-5 Rangers victory. Irvin has a 1.80 ERA in three starts this month.

The A’s have some value here, as Irvin has been good against Texas this season and has had a solid July. The Rangers having to fly cross country isn’t an ideal situation either, even though Thursday’s game in Miami had an early start. This one could really go either way, but Oakland has the better ROI.
