A pivotal weekend on the Formula 1 schedule is set for this weekend, as a Sprint Weekend will see a big points-scoring opportunity for the drivers at the top of the World Championship. Ran over half-race distance, a rapid contest will be staged, with Lando Norris and Max Verstappen both chasing their third Sprint Race victories of the season.

Following a double disqualification for McLaren, Norris’ advantage at the top of the Drivers’ Championship stands at just 24 points. Verstappen’s dominant win in Las Vegas ensures that he has the momentum, while Piastri is now level on points with the Dutchman, despite having led the championship a few weeks ago.

The destination of the title firmly remains in the hands of Norris, but back-to-back wins for Verstappen this weekend could put intense pressure on the Brit in his hunt for a first world title. Despite that, Norris could yet claim the title this weekend with wins in both races should Verstappen and Piastri finish off the podium.

Interestingly, it will be the third straight season that Qatar has hosted a Sprint Race, with Piastri winning each of the previous two. However, he is yet to win in this format since his victory in this race 12 months ago.

This shorter format of race will suit the fastest Shootout Qualifier on Friday. Norris’ qualifying record has been staggering this season, and that could give him the big advantage in his race to extend his championship advantage before the Grand Prix on Sunday.
