Before Betting on the 2023 FIBA World Cup Champion

There has been plenty of turbulences ahead of the World Cup, with some of the biggest names in today’s basketball withdrawing from their respective squads.

For instance, the guys who won four of the previous five NBA MVP awards, Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo, decided to withdraw from their respective national teams, severely decreasing their odds of winning the championship.

For many, this will be one of the weakest tournaments ever because many superstars chose to skip any action this summer. Besides the two above-mentioned, Jamal Murray also isn’t with Canada, this year’s No.1 pick Victor Wembanyama is out, Kristaps Porzingis and Rui Hachimura as well, the same as Domantas Sabonis and many others.

The US team is leading the list, confidently ahead of all the other rivals. Compared to just one month ago, the gap between them and all the others is thinner, but still, them winning gold looks like a sure bet.

France, Canada, and Australia are behind, with minimal differences determining their order. Evan Fournier, Rudy Gobert and Nicolas Batum lead the French team, with other veterans such as Nando de Colo. Canada is boosted by plenty of NBA talent, like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, RJ Barrett, and Dillon Brooks, while Australia has Josh Giddey, Joe Ingles, Patty Mills, and Dante Exum.

The reigning World champs, Spain, sit fifth, again underestimated but visibly weaker than the last time, with the previous MVP, Ricky Rubio, retiring due to mental health issues. Veterans like the Hernangomez brothers, Rudy Fernandez and Sergio Lull, are still present.

Crippled Serbia is 16/1. Without Jokic, Micic, Pokusevski, and with only Bogdan Bogdanovic, the Serbs have a formidable team, but it’s hard to believe they might win the gold. It’s the same with Slovenia, who, apart from Luka Doncic, don’t have any notable players.
