Race Preview

A red-hot renewal of the Japan Cup is set for Tokyo on Nov 30. Japanese runners have dominated the recent editions, winning every renewal of the Japan Cup since 2005. Therefore, it is little surprise to see Masquerade Ball dominate the betting.

The three-year-old has enjoyed a prolific season on track in Japan, previously winning Grade One honors over course and distance at the start of the month. That was a career-best run, and further improvement will be required if he is to justify his short price on Sunday.

Croix Du Nord will be back on home turf this weekend after enjoying a couple of good runs in France during the summer. The Japanese star was a shock winner of the G3 Prix du Prince d’Orange, before finishing a more than respectable 14th in the G1 Arc.

Shin Emperor could be challenging to overlook based on patches of his form. The four-year-old was sixth in the G1 Irish Champion Stakes on his latest effort, but he was a winner earlier in the season when landing the G2 Neom Turf Cup.

Japan Cup Picks

A French trainer hasn’t landed success in the Japan Cup since 1987. However, Calandagan for the all-conquering Francis Graffard yard could be the value play. The four-year-old was a three-time winner in Group One company last season, including when effortlessly securing success in the G1 British Champion Stakes at Ascot in October.
