Event Preview
The idyllic Hainan Island hosts DP World Tour action for the second time this weekend, as the Hainan Classic gets underway on Thursday. This event covers a total of 7,711 yards, with the stroke play competition boasting a prize fund of $2.25 million.
Marco Penge was the inaugural champion 12 months ago, finishing three shots clear of Sean Crocker and Kristoffer Reitan. Angel Ayora still looks the main contender to finally get a win on the Tour this year. The Spanish star maintained his consistency by claiming a share of 18th in the Joburg Open earlier this month.
Thriston Lawrence is always a player that merits respect on the European Tour. The South African is a five-time winner on the DP World Tour, including a dominant win in a high-class field when landing the European Masters last August.
Maximilian Steinlechner could be an interesting contender at a bigger price. The star has a reliable record in DP World Tour events in China, performing well on both starts in the country last year. Among those was a playoff defeat.
Hainan Classic Picks
Home talent Wenyi Deng could be a fascinating contender. The Chinese star has progressed quickly on the Tour, finished second in the Australian PGA Championship, and making a return to the top 20 at the Dubai Desert Classic. A less competitive field could ensure that he is a top choice this weekend.
