One of the pivotal races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby is set for this weekend, as Gulfstream Park hosts the G1 Florida Derby. Last year’s Derby winner (Sovereignty) finished second in the race before winning at Churchill Downs. Find the odds and our Florida Derby picks here.

Race Preview

One of the most informative preps on the Road to the Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday, with 15 previous winners of the Florida Derby later following up with success at Churchill Downs.

Chief Wallabee is the current favorite for the Derby, and he clearly holds obvious claims for the team of William Mott and Junior Alvarado. The son of Constitution was narrowly touched off by Commandment last time out in the G2 Fountain of Youth, but that form should be reversed now Chief Wallabee is stepped up in trip.

His hold-up style will suit the challenge this weekend, and there will be no surprise to see him shorten in the Derby betting market. Nearly is a fascinating contender for Todd Pletcher. The three-year-old has won on both starts this season, including when easily beating Bravaro by a yawning margin in the G2 Holy Bull.

Albus and Timeless Victory both come into this race with recent wins under their belt, but the latter may be most interesting for trainer Edward Plesa after winning over course and distance.

The Puma deserves major respect for the Gustavo Delgado barn. The Essential Quality colt was excellent last time when picking up the pieces late in the race to overcome stakes winner Further Ado in the G3 Tampa Bay Derby. Shouldn’t be underestimated.

Florida Derby Picks

I’m a huge fan of Chief Wallabee, and the Constitution colt could put on a show this weekend to strengthen his position in the Kentucky Derby market. This step up to 1 1/8 miles will bring out the best in him. The Puma and Nearly may round off the top three.
