Five graded stakes races are set for Keeneland on Saturday, October 4, with the card in Lexington headlined by the G1 Coolmore Turf Mile. The race serves as an important prep ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Mile, and there will be an international feel to the Grade One in 2025. You can find our picks here.

Race Preview

Win and You’re In action headlines the card at Keeneland on Saturday, as the victor in the Coolmore Turf Mile will secure their spot in the gates for the Turf at next month’s Breeders’ Cup. A high-quality field of 12 will go to post in Lexington, with a number of notable European raiders likely to dominate the betting.

Aidan O’Brien and Frankie Dettori team up with Diego Velazquez, who has already shown a high-level of form over a mile in Europe this season. A statement was made on good to soft ground last time when beating Notable Speech to land the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois.

There is also French interest away from the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the U.S. this weekend, as Francis Graffard sends Woodshauna to Keeneland. The French-bred three-year-old is unraced over a mile, but looked potentially very smart with a Group One success over seven furlongs in July. Ground conditions may not suit the colt this Saturday.

Chad Brown’s Program Trading could be the leading contender of the American-trained runners. The five-year-old drops back down to a mile this weekend after a disappointing fifth in the G1 Manhattan Stakes. At a price, Beach Gold could yet still improve after a close third behind Epic Ride in the G3 Mint Millions last time.

Coolmore Turf Mile Picks

I’m a big fan of the in-form Andrew Balding runner in the Coolmore Turf Mile this weekend. Jonquil was second in the French 2,000 Guineas earlier this season, before taking his form to the next level when landing the G2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood in late August. He is still improving, and quick ground could suit his chances more than most.
