Race Preview

Some of the fastest horses on the planet will be in action on the grass at Del Mar on Saturday, November 1, as the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint is the first televised race on NBC’s Championships Saturday.

As expected, a wide-open edition of the Turf Sprint is set, with a field of 12 runners taking their chance. The betting is currently headed by seven-year-old Motorious for trainer Philip D’Amato. The veteran has won six from ten attempts in stakes company, which included a success in the G3 Flash Handicap over course and distance at the end of August.

Reef Runner is closely matched with the favorite on that form, as he crossed the line first before being disqualified in the G3 Flash Handicap. He has since bounced back to winning ways after landing G2 Eddie D Stakes at Santa Anita. Could be over-priced in the betting.

Ag Bullet has done nothing wrong on track this season, winning on his last two starts after finishing seventh after a layoff. She’s Quality is a respected contender, and the booking of Colin Keane is an eye-catcher.

Horses aged three and have won two of the last four editions. Shisospicy has been excelling over six furlongs in recent months, including when landing a three-length success over Cloe at Keeneland last month. Another with a fighting chance.

Invincible Papa could be a very interesting Japanese raider this weekend. The stalker has a perfect post draw for his running style, and was a rapid finisher when landing a Group One over five furlongs in Japan earlier this year. Could be a notable inclusion in exotics.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Picks

Outsiders have an excellent record in the Turf Sprint, meaning Invincible Papa could be a standout contender.

However, Khadeem could be a notable angle for the combination of Frankie Dettori and Charles Hills.

The nine-year-old made a very striking impression at Keeneland in early October when winning more comfortably than the winning margin suggested in the G2 Woodford Stakes. He isn’t likely to give bettors an easy watch, as his run will come very late in the day.
