Race Preview

One of the most exciting races of the weekend at Del Mar will come in the form of the G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. A competitive betting heat is expected for this trappy contest over six furlongs, and cases can be made for all runners in the field.

Bentornato will be a likely favorite for the Jose Francisco D’Angelo team. The four-year-old made a stunning return to action when winning by over five lengths at Churchill Downs last month, and he was a close second behind the returning champion Straight No Chaser in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint last year.

Imagination is an obvious contender for the Bob Baffert yard. The four-year-old was the winner of the G2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship at the end of last month, easily holding Dr Venkman by a length. That race has a proven record of finding Breeders’ Cup Sprint winners.

Kopion also holds a solid chance for trainer Richard Mandella. The four-year-old filly was second over a mile at Del Mar at the start of last month, but this drop back to six furlongs should suit after winning over the shorter distances at the start of the calendar year.

Breeders’ Cup Sprint Picks

Plenty will have leading claims in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint this weekend. However, an outside chance could be given to Banishing.

The five-year-old has been running over longer distances throughout this season, including when third behind Mystik Dan in the G2 Lukas Classic. However, he has a proven record over six furlongs, winning the Jeff Hall Memorial in July.

Everything points toward connections targeting this race from the start of the season, and he should be primed to out-run his odds.
