Race Preview

Ultra-competitive action kicks off Championships Saturday at the Breeders’ Cup on November 1. A talented crop of fillies and mares will clash over a seven-furlong distance in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint.

Sweet Azteca will be a likely favorite for the Richard Baltras yard. The five-year-old has won on two occasions since joining the stable, and was excellent over 6 ½ furlongs at Del Mar last time out when landing the G3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap. This is a step up, but she could still be unexposed over seven furlongs.

Tamara is a hugely respected contender for the Richard Mandella stable, and she was excellent over an extended six furlongs on her return when landing the G3 Chillingworth at Santa Anita. Unexposed over this distance, and she should still have plenty more to offer.

Hope Road, Richi, and Splendora give Bob Baffert a trio of live chances in the race on Saturday. The former was excellent on her latest start, while Splendora could be an interesting angle after winning over six furlongs and a mile on her last two starts.

Haulin Ice could also hold leading claims if bringing her A-Game. Saffie Joseph has a recent win in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, and the four-year-old has been remarkably consistent throughout this season. Comes to Del Mar after a dominant win at Gulfstream Park in the G3 Princess Rooney.

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Picks

Cases can be made for plenty of the runners involved this weekend. However, the one runner that is massively over-priced is the Japanese raider.

Fee Blanche showed excellent speed earlier in the season when landing a dominant success over seven furlongs in listed company in Japan. She followed up that success by stretching out with Group Three success over a mile. Has a recent run under her belt, and she is primed for a strong showing from the middle post.
