Race Preview

Superstar fillies and mares will be in action at Del Mar on Nov 1, as the Breeders’ Cup Distaff will be staged. There will be a competitive feel surrounding the race following Thorpedo Anna’s retirement, and cases can be made for many of the runners involved.

Bob Baffert-trained Seismic Beauty currently heads the betting. The four-year-old has won three from four this year, and was excellent when landing the G1 Clement L Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar at the start of August. Her ratings ensure that she is a strong contender in this company.

A strong group of three year olds will also take their chance this weekend. Nitrogen is the runner for Mark Casse, but she was disappointingly beaten by Gin Gin in the G1 Juddmonte Spinster at the start of the month. Despite that, she remains hugely progressive, winning six from ten stakes starts, which includes an excellent win over Good Cheer in the G1 Alabama.

Gin Gin stole the G1 Spinster from the front, but her character to find more under pressure ensures that the four-year-old could still be underestimated in this field. The tough runner for Brendan Walsh could have the track bias on her side.

Dorth Vader is also a runner with proven runs at the highest level, including most recently when beaten a nose by Thorpedo Anna in the G1 Person Ensign. She’s unlikely to be far away.

Japan also throw two darts at the race after famously upsetting the odds in 2021. Argine could be the most reliable contender after excelling over the Distaff trip when landing Grade Three honors in Japan in August.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Picks

Plenty of runners have leading chances in this year’s Distaff, and it could pay to take on the runners at the top of the betting.

Clicquot could be the kind of runner that is just hitting her peak form, and Brendan Walsh rarely gets it wrong in the big races. The unexposed three-year-old filly has won on each of her last three starts, and looked very impressive when overpowering Dry Powder to win the G1 Cotillion by a neck at the end of September.

Interestingly, Grade One winners have an 85% strike-rate in the Distaff, while 78% of the winners have been aged three or four.
