Race Preview

One of the most competitive editions of the G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in recent memory is set for Del Mar on Saturday. Previous champion Full Serrano will be aiming to retain his crown, but a talented crop of improving runners could make it challenging for the John Sadler-trained runner.

Nysos should be a leading chance for the Bob Baffert yard. The four-year-old has been sensational throughout the season, with his only defeat coming over seven furlongs when beaten a neck by Mindframe in the G1 Churchill Downs Stakes. Since then, he has easily landed the G3 Triple Bend and G2 San Diego Handicap.

Goal Oriented ensures that Baffert has a strong hand in the Dirt Mile this year. The three-year-old drops back in trip this weekend after finishing within a length of Journalism in the G1 Haskell, and taking third behind Baeza in the G1 Pennsylvania Derby. Interesting, but remains to be seen if he is as effective over a mile.

The inclusions of Mystik Dan and White Abarrio ensure that this is a classy renewal of the Dirt Mile. The latter was the winner of the Classic two years ago, and a pace collapse could ensure that his stamina gives him a leading chance.

Patriot Spirit is a fascinating outsider worth considering for Michael Campbell. The pacey four-year-old has been excellent over seven furlongs on his last two starts, and this return to a mile could be an interesting option if he is able to see out the distance.

Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Picks

Baffert could hold the key to this race, but Citizen Bull may be the one that is overlooked.

The three-year-old won the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar last November, and returned with a victory over course and distance at the end of August. Failed to make an impression in the Derby and Santa Anita Derby over further this season, but a mile around Del Mar suits this colt down to the ground.
