Women’s Australian Open Contenders
The Women’s Australian Open promises to set the tone for the calendar year, and a number of players will have leading claims. However, Aryna Sabalenka looks to be the player to beat. The 27-year-old looked in excellent form in her warm-up for the major, emphatically winning the Brisbane International. Sabalenka was a beaten finalist in the major last year, but she won the Slam in 2023 and 2024.
Iga Swiatek largely went under the radar throughout 2025, but she reached the semi-final stage in three of the four Grand Slams. The Pole showed that there is more to her game than being a clay court specialist after winning at Wimbledon. However, it would be a slight concern that her 76% win rate at the Australian Open is the lowest of all the majors.
Madison Keys will be among the leading American chances, as she bids to defend her title. Keys has a strong record Down Under, reaching the semi-final stage on three from eight appearances. Coco Gauff is likely to have greater pressure on her shoulders, but exits in the quarterfinals and fourth round of the hard-court majors last year do leave her with questions to answer.
Belinda Bencic is likely to be one of the stories of the opening major. The former Olympic champion has revived her career, and she climbed into the top ten of the world rankings for the first time since 2023 earlier this week. Her memorable return to action came after an eleven-month maternity break, becoming the first woman since Serena Williams in 2019 to re-enter the top ten after giving birth.
Women’s Australian Open Outright Winner Picks
Amanda Anisimova ended last season in memorable style after reaching the finals at Wimbledon and the US Open. Her game is best suited to a hard surface, and the Australian Open could be her opportunity to gain a first major honor. At the prices, she is well worth the chance Down Under after twice winning WTA 1000 events on hard courts in 2025.
