Event Preview

The stage is set for one of the most dramatic conclusions to a Formula 1 season. Three drivers remain in the hunt for the Drivers’ Championship, with a potential winner-take-all showdown set for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Lando Norris holds the advantage based on current standings, as he holds a 12-point lead over Max Verstappen. Oscar Piastri was the biggest loser last weekend, dropping to third in the standings despite being the fastest man on track throughout.

Questionable strategy by McLaren has smashed the door open for Verstappen, as the team made the bold call to ignore pitting either of their two drivers following an early safety car in the Qatar Grand Prix.

That decision ultimately cost them, with the remainder of the grid, including Verstappen, taking the option to take an easier pit stop. The team’s option meant Piastri gave up his lead, before fighting back excellently to take second.

Norris was slightly more fortunate to take fourth, as the damage in the title picture could have been worse had Antonelli not have gone wide allowing the Brit to take the spot on the penultimate lap.

Still, the overall advantage is with Norris. The Brit will be crowned World Champion if he finishes on the podium next weekend. However, it gets more confusing if he is to finish outside of the top three.

Verstappen needs to win the race, and then hope Norris doesn’t finish on the podium. Meanwhile, Piastri will need to win the race and hope his teammate finishes outside of the top five.

Huge pressure will be on the top three this weekend, but there was something about Norris last weekend that suggested that he was deflated. Piastri was on top form throughout the weekend, but the pace in the Red Bull was on another level.

Therefore, Verstappen’s know-how of getting over the line and holding his nerve could be the difference in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
