Hey everyone 👋

I’m completely new to sports betting and honestly, I have no idea what I’m doing. I’ve been a sports fan (kind of), but I never really paid attention to things like point spreads, moneylines, or parlays until now. I figured I’d give it a shot, but wow—there’s a lot more to this than I expected!

I’d love some advice from the more experienced bettors 🙏

I’m mostly looking to have fun with this, but I wouldn’t mind actually winning a bet or two. Any beginner-friendly strategies or tips would be hugely appreciated!

Seconding this - no idea what the hell to do or where to start but occasionally would want to bet on a Snooker or boxing match (even if it's probably fixed).

Probably the best advice I got was:
Just bet on the games/sports you're interested in and actually know about and don't bet more than you can afford to lose

In the same boat - no idea where to start, but would be fun to place a bet once in a while.

I'm wondering what sport would be the easiest to start with and the bets are simple enough to understand for a complete newbie 😀

Does anyone have a good place to learn the different bet types and how you place them?

Bet on sports you know and trust your gut feeling. If you have a bad feeling before putting your wager down. If you feel like it's more than you can lose then don't do it, there's no sure thing in sports

Hey @BetHerBelieveIt and everyone else jumping in...

Welcome to the world of sports betting! It can definitely feel overwhelming at first, but trust me, it gets easier once you get a feel for the basics.

Here's a quick rundown for anyone just starting out:

Start with what you know – Like @dyslectic and @tacomouse said, focus on the sports you already watch or enjoy. You’ll make more informed decisions that way.

Learn the basics – Here are a few key bet types you’ll come across:

  • Moneyline – Just picking the winner. Easiest to understand.

  • Point Spread – A team has to win by (or not lose by) a certain number of points.

  • Parlay – Combining multiple bets into one for a bigger payout (but all have to win).

  • Over/Under (Totals) – Betting whether the total combined score will be over or under a set number.

Best sports for beginners?

  • NFL and NBA: Tons of data and coverage, so it’s easy to research.

  • Boxing and MMA: Moneyline bets are usually the go-to, so they’re simpler to start with.

Final tip: Always treat it as entertainment, especially at first. Keep it fun, bet small, and don't chase losses.
