The College Football Playoff is finally expanding to 12 teams for the 2024-25 season. With 8 additional slots now available, let’s take a look at the overall odds and the teams most likely to claim an expanded CFP slot.
Expanded CFP Guide
In past seasons of the 4-team College Football Playoff, two of the six “New Year’s Six” bowl games counted as the semifinals, with the other four being played as normal bowl games. In the expanded 12-team CFP, all six of those bowl games will be utilized, with four being quaterfinals and two being semifinals. The semifinal games will continue to rotate on a yearly basis.
The 12 participating teams will be selected based on CFP Rankings. The four highest-ranking conference champions will receive spots 1-4 and advance straight to the quarterfinals. The next eight highest-ranking teams will compete in the CFP’s first-round games. In the 2024-25 season, the bowl games are as follows:
First Round:
Game 1 (#5 vs #12) – December 20
Game 2 (#6 vs #11) – December 21
Game 3 (#7 vs #10) – December 21
Game 4 (#8 vs #9) – December 21
The first-round games of the CFP will not be linked to any specific bowl game, but played as standalone games.

Fiesta Bowl (#1 vs #8/#9) – December 31
Peach Bowl (#2 vs #7/#10) – January 1
Rose Bowl (#3 vs #6/#11) – January 1
Sugar Bowl (#4 vs #5/#12) – January 1
