Saudi Arabia caused one of the biggest upsets in 2022, and they will be aiming to replicate their win over Argentina at the World Cup when they face Uruguay on MD1 on June 15.

Uruguay’s form has been indifferent over the last 18 months, but they are still widely expected to join Spain in the next round of the competition.

Saudi Hoping to Replicate 2022 Feat

Saudi Arabia created one of the last memories of the 2022 World Cup after beating subsequent world champions Argentina in the group stage.

However, defeats in their following two fixtures mean that the nation suffered a group stage exit for the second straight edition. Georgios Donis will be tasked with getting the nation back on track, and they qualified for the World Cup impressively after winning eight of their 18 fixtures.

However, their recent form would be a major concern. Saudi Arabia have suffered four defeats in their last five internationals, with their only win coming against the lowly-ranked Puerto Rico.

South Americans Expected to Reach Knockout Round

Marcelo Bielsa will have pressure on his shoulders this summer, as Uruguay bid to avoid a second straight exit in the group stage of the World Cup.

The South American nation previously finished fourth in 2010, and questions could be asked of their qualifying record after winning just seven of their 18 fixtures, and scoring a low total of 22 goals. Uruguay have failed to win in their last four, and they have played out successive draws in 2026.

The nation find themselves in a period of transition, with aging stars such as Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez transitioned out of the squad. Their chances this summer will hinge on the performances of Real Madrid superstar Federico Valverde.

Saudi Arabia vs. Uruguay Pick

I don’t expect Uruguay to be overly competitive this summer, but they have more than enough quality in their squad to record wins over Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde to secure second spot behind Spain in Group H.
