Event Preview

The world’s most famous event on the golf schedule is set for this weekend, as Augusta National plays host to the opening major of the season- The Masters. Since 1934, the prestigious green jacket has been one of the most prestigious honors in sport, with Rory McIlroy ending his wait for the career Grand Slam with a memorable playoff win against Justin Rose in last year’s event.

Scottie Scheffler will be the hot favorite this weekend, but The Masters typically rewards players who are in the best recent form. That would be a concern for the world number one, who has failed to finish in the top ten since the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Xander Schauffele is criminally underrated at the current prices, having finished T2 at The Masters in 2019, and making the cut in seven of his eight starts at the major. The American has gained strokes throughout the year, and his recent form is red-hot, taking fourth at the Valspar and seventh at the Genesis.

Jon Rahm could be the leading European hope for many this year, as the Spaniard bids to win The Masters for the second time. Rahm has made the cut on all nine appearances at the major and was T14 in last year’s event.

Reigning champions have a poor record in their Masters defense, which is damaging to McIlroy’s chances this weekend. Bryson DeChambeau shouldn’t be overlooked after claiming a career-best T5 12 months ago.

Robert MacIntyre brings solid recent form to the event after taking T2 at the Texas Open last weekend. Meanwhile, Tommy Fleetwood is a sleeper pick after making the cut in his last eight starts, and achieving top-ten finishes in seven of his last 12.

The Masters Picks

Collin Morikawa is a fascinating outsider this weekend, but the main win angle is for Ludvig Aberg to finally break his Sunday hoodoo. The Swede has an excellent record at The Masters, taking T2 in 2024 and seventh in 2025. Aberg’s performances in recent events on the final day have seen him slip under the radar, but he could be set to pounce on the biggest stage at one of his favorite courses.
