The Pistons trailed by 18 points at the break before outscoring Atlanta 66-48 in the second half to send the game into an extra frame.
After CJ McCollum's three-point play gave the Hawks a 126-123 lead in overtime, Tobias Harris missed a jumper, and Jalen Duren's shot was off the mark as well, enabling Atlanta to notch its 15th win in 17 games following the All-Star break.
All five starters reached double figures for Detroit. Duren paced the offense with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Harris added 22 points, three rebounds, and three assists.
New Orleans hopes to avoid a third consecutive loss
Following a three-game win streak, the Pelicans enter this matchup amid a two-game skid, including a 121-116 setback against the New York Knicks.
The Knicks led by 14 points after the first 12 minutes before New Orleans rallied to pull within 109-107 with over four minutes remaining in regulation. But a pair of clutch jumpers from Jalen Brunson provided New York with enough separation to escape with a five-point win.
Zion Williamson led six double-digit scorers. His final stat line included 22 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Jeremiah Fears led the second unit with 21 points on 3-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
