- LA Galaxy started the season with a draw
- Charlotte FC held by St. Louis on opening night in the MLS
The competitive action at the start of the MLS season comes thick and fast, with the LA Galaxy and Charlotte FC colliding at Dignity Health Sports Park on Feb 28.
The Galaxy looked back to their efficient best on opening night, recording a credible draw against a challenging opponent despite playing with ten men for much of the second half.
Charlotte FC also kicked off the season with a draw, but they will need to improve their offensive efficiency if they are to challenge for a playoff spot.

Galaxy to Build on Positive Start
Greg Vanney will take positives from his LA Galaxy’s start to the season, as they bid to break back into the playoffs after a disappointing 2025 campaign.
The Galaxy have played out 1-1 draws in their first two competitive fixtures in 2026, including a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the talented NYCFC last weekend. They started their opening fixture excellently, with off-season recruit Joao Klauss netting inside the opening two minutes.
However, their dominance was undone after Carlos Emiro Garces was sent off, leading to the New York equalizer from the penalty spot. But, their attacking play before the leveller bodes well for their chances this season.

Smith’s Charlotte Stutter on Opening Night
Dean Smith’s Charlotte FC should be one of the leading contenders for a playoff spot based on the quality that they have across their roster.
However, they fell below their usual high standards in the opening weekend after playing out a 1-1 draw on the road against St. Louis. Despite boasting excellent attacking quality, Charlotte managed just three shots on target and relied on their counter-attacking ability to pose questions for their opponents.
A rethink of their tactical plan is expected ahead of the trip to California on Saturday.

LA Galaxy vs. Charlotte Picks
Being reduced to ten men was damaging to the Galaxy’s chances on opening night. However, they were excellent before the sending off. This weekend’s clash could give them the perfect opportunity to get a first win on the board in 2026.
