Event Preview
A historic event on the DP World Tour is set for this weekend, as the finest players on the European Tour compete at the South African Open. This event was first staged back in 1903, making it one of the oldest national golf tournaments in the world. The field will compete across 7,213 yards to win their share of the $1.5 million purse.
Patrick Reed is an obvious starting point this weekend. The American has been in red-hot form on the DP World Tour since the turn of the year, winning both the Qatar Masters and the Dubai Desert Classic. This weekend, he targets an unlikely treble.
South African players have dominated their home event, winning each of the last seven editions. Dean Burmester won the South African Open back in 2023, landing a three-shot winning margin. Meanwhile, Thriston Lawrence shouldn’t be overlooked after holding his nerve to claim victory in 2022.
Angel Ayora also holds leading claims this weekend. The Spanish 21-year-old finished an excellent eighth at the Kenya Open last weekend, while he was also T5 at the Qatar Masters last month.
South African Open Picks
We like the chances of Jayden Schaper this weekend. The South African has shown reliable form so far this season, most recently finishing ninth at the Qatar Masters. On home turf, he could make his presence felt this weekend.
