De Zerbi Searching For Answers Following Big Summer Spending Spree
Hopes were high ahead of Tottenham’s return to the Premier League, with over $400 million spent during the summer transfer window.
However, many of the same issues that saw Spurs locked in a relegation battle last term remain. Tottenham were humbled on the opening weekend, losing 3-0 on the road against Brentford. But, Spurs have an excellent record in their first home game of a new season, winning in each of the last five campaigns.
Unwanted history could be made this weekend though, as Spurs haven’t failed to score in the opening two rounds since 1992-93. Last weekend’s defeat was also the eleventh time that Tottenham have lost a game by a three-goal margin since the start of the 2023-24 season.

Newcastle Hoping to Build on Opening Day Promise
There was a bleak mood surrounding Newcastle United’s opening game of the season, with Matthias Jaissle overseeing a massive overhaul of the squad.
However, the early signs are incredibly promising, as the Magpies were excellent against Liverpool and were unfortunate not to have won the game on the opening day. But, the dropped points signal a major issue that should be addressed, as no club in the Premier League since the start of last season have dropped more points from winning positions than the Magpies (29).
Improvement will also be required on the road, as Newcastle have won just four of their previous 22 away from home. Anthony Elanga made a bright start to the new season, scoring on the opening day to accumulate more goals than he did in the entirety of the previous campaign.

Things could get worse for Tottenham before they begin to get better. Newcastle looked incredibly well-drilled in their opening draw against Liverpool and confidence ahead of this weekend could be taken from the fact that the Magpies have won six of their last eight against Spurs. It is also notable that Newcastle have won three of their previous four trips to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
