Sounders Endure Early Leagues Cup Exit
It wasn’t the Leagues Cup defense that Brian Schmetzer would have been hoping for, as the Seattle Sounders crashed out in the opening round after losing two of their three fixtures.
Their form since the World Cup has been concerning, losing six of their last seven, including defeat in each of their previous six MLS matches. Defensive improvement will be required on their return to the competition this weekend after allowing eleven in their four MLS fixtures since the World Cup.
A return to Lumen Field should suit their chances this weekend, as the Sounders have avoided defeat in five of their seven at home. But, it is notable that they have kept clean sheets in just 14% of their home matches in 2026.

Caps Struggling Since Berhalter’s Departure
There will be pressure on the Vancouver Whitecaps this weekend, as they bid to rediscover their best form in the MLS. The Caps have looked a shell of themselves since selling Sebastian Berhalter to Middlesbrough at the end of July.
Since the departure of the star midfielder, the Caps have failed to win in four fixtures in all competitions, which includes three straight defeats in the Leagues Cup. Their latest loss was inflicted on penalties by Tigres UANL in midweek, with the Caps scoring just their third regulation goal in their last five fixtures.
There will be questions for Jesper Sorensen to answer this weekend, as the head coach searches for a solution after losing one of his most influential players.

Both of these teams will come into this weekend with low confidence, but the Caps have greater concerns based on their poor defensive and offensive records since the World Cup.
