One of the most exciting summer soccer competitions on the annual North American calendar gets underway at the start of August, as clubs from the MLS and LIGA MX lock horns in the Leagues Cup.
U.S. teams have dominated the recent editions of the tournament, with Inter Miami and the Seattle Sounders winning the last two. The Leagues Cup will see teams from the MLS and Liga MX compete in a group stage in the opening phase. Cross-competition matches will see each team involved play three group stage clashes, with the top four clubs from each region progressing to the knockout round.
The remaining eight teams compete in single-legged quarterfinals, with winners progressing to the semi-finals. This year’s final is set to be staged on September 6, 2026.
The 2024 champions are red-hot favorites to win the Leagues Cup for the second time in three seasons. Inter Miami have been in winning form since the World Cup, but it is worth noting that they will be without Lionel Messi for the opening round of the Leagues Cup in 2026. They should cruise through to the knockouts, but MLS matches may take priority as the quarterfinals and semi-finals play out.
The Vancouver Whitecaps will be a respected contender in the tournament this summer, having shown their progress already in 2026 to reach the round of 16 in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The Whitecaps have been the standout team in the Western Conference this season, but they have hit a low point in their form with just two wins recorded since the start of May.
Toluca have historically been one of the best-performing Mexican teams in the Leagues Cup, reaching the quarterfinals in 2025. Their quality has been evident already this season after winning the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The Mexican side come into this year’s edition of the Leagues Cup in good form after winning once in the opening two rounds of the Liga MX season.
At a massive price, Orlando City could be set to produce a strong effort in the Leagues Cup this summer. The tournament will take priority due to their current position in the MLS, while a corner has been turned in their form following the arrivals of Daryl Dike and Antoine Griezmann after winning back-to-back clashes in the MLS. They have recent experience of going deep in the tournament, having reached the semi-finals in 2025.
