Cruz Azul will likely be among the leading Mexican contenders in the Leagues Cup this year after enjoying an excellent start to the new season.
They have won two of their opening three Liga MX encounters, and confidence would have been gained following an excellent 3-1 victory against Toluca in the Campeon de Campeones Final at the end of July. Their biggest strength has been their attacking output, having scored 2.33 goals per game from an average xG of 2.26.
However, they will need to improve defensively after allowing 2.00 goals per match. Angel Jeremy Marquez Castaneda has enjoyed an excellent start to the new campaign, having registered three goal involvements in as many appearances.

The Philadelphia Union should bring confidence into their Leagues Cup opener after winning each of their previous three in the MLS since returning to action after the World Cup.
They have shown excellent attacking output over that period, scoring seven goals overall. Recent confidence can be gained from a comeback win against Atlanta United, with Neil Pierre and Ezekiel Alladoh scoring goals in second-half injury time.
However, Philadelphia will need to improve their home form in 2026, having won just 33% of their nine clashes at Subaru Park. But, they have largely been defensively reliable, having allowed just 1.00 goals per game.
Cruz Azul have made a very impressive start to their domestic season, and their excellent quality in the final third could be crucial this week. Therefore, we could foresee the Mexican club claiming a matchday one win at Subaru Park against the Union.
