Detroit Is Battling for the NFC North Lead

In 2024, the Lions seemed like an unstoppable force as they went 15-2, clinched home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, and looked like they were heading for their first Super Bowl appearance. However, they ran into an unintimidated and hungry Commanders team that dropped them in the Divisional Round.

After losing both their coordinators to head coaching jobs, there was speculation that their championship window was closing, if not closed altogether. But after a Week 1 loss to the trendy Super Bowl pick Packers, they won four straight before losing to the Chiefs. Now they sit at 6-3, fighting for 1st place in the tough NFC North.

In Week 10 against the wounded Commanders, they won in a 44-22 blowout. QB Jared Goff threw for 320 yards and 3 TDs. Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 142 yards on 15 carries, caught 3 balls for 30 yards, and scored 3 TDs.

While the NFL MVP spotlight is on Drake Maye and Matthew Stafford, Gibbs is right up there with them.

Dan Campbell's team is aggressive and tough, and it will need to be to win on Sunday night in Philly. They're 5th in the league in takeaway differential at +6. They average 31.4 points per game, good for 2nd in the league. Overall, they have been solid in all areas of the game.

A minor controversy was quieted with Detroit's blowout win over Washington, as Campbell had taken over playcalling duties from offensive coordinator John Morton.

Star tight end Sam LaPorta has been dealing with a back injury and is questionable.

Philly's Defense Saved Them vs Green Bay

It must be a day ending in "y" because the Eagles are infighting.

Sometimes it has a negative impact on them, and sometimes it doesn't. As usual, one of the key malcontents is wide receiver A.J. Brown.

However, unlike past Brown-inspired controversies, there has been little pushback on his complaints. This isn't about what it's usually about: him not getting the ball enough. It's an objective analysis of the Eagles' offense and why it's struggling to put points on the board.

In Week 10, the Eagles beat the Packers 10-7, mustering 294 yards of total offense. Their defense carried them, holding Jordan Love to 176 yards passing, sacking him 3 times. Josh Jacobs was limited to 74 yards on the ground.

Philly's offense wasn't much better. Jalen Hurts threw for 183 yards, but hit DeVonta Smith for a 36-yard TD pass that made the difference. Saquon Barkley again struggled with 60 yards on the ground. He caught 3 balls for 41 yards.

While a win is a win is a win, Philly has a lot to clean up. They cannot expect to get very far in the playoffs without running the ball. Barkley is averaging fewer than 4 yards per carry. It's not just terrible compared to his superlative 2024 season. It's terrible, period.

If they can't score more than 10 points against the Lions, they're going to lose.

Philly is almost fully healthy. They dodged a bullet when 6X Pro Bowl and 2X All-Pro tackle Lane Johnson was able to return against the Packers after a leg injury. Losing him would have been catastrophic.

Lions vs Eagles NFL Pick

For the Week 11 Lions-Eagles matchup, Philly has the NFC East sewn up. Detroit needs to win this game to maintain its playoff position and have a strong chance at the division title.

The Eagles' locker room controversies are generally just noise. They know they're not playing well offensively. The question is whether they overcome those issues as they did in 2024 or let them crush them late in the season as they did during their 2023 collapse that nearly cost head coach Nick Sirianni his job.

Philly will not be able to stop Gibbs or Amon-Ra St. Brown.

The underdog Lions will win the game outright.
