In the final game before the All-Star break, the Mariners send Emerson Hancock to the hill to try and break their 5-game skid. Despite the losing streak and having fallen below .500, they are still right near the top of the AL West.
Given the circumstances, expect President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto to be aggressive at the upcoming MLB trade deadline.
Hancock has had an excellent season with a 2.2 bWAR and a 3.23 ERA. In 17 starts, he's tossed 97.2 innings, allowed 75 hits, 35 earned runs, and 12 homers, walking 24 and striking out 92. Against the Blue Jays in his last start, he tossed 7 innings, surrendered 2 hits, no runs, walked 2, and K'd 5.
Of course, the M's problems could largely be solved if they get a full recovery from Cal Raleigh. After his historic 2025, he's been injured and horrible in 2026 with a .168 batting average, a .580 OPS, and 9 homers.
J.P. Crawford is hitting .211. Luke Raley is at .229.
Dominic Canzone leads the team in homers with 15 and has an .864 OPS. Julio Rodriguez has been good, but not up to the expected standard. He has 14 homers and a .741 OPS with 12 stolen bases in 15 attempts.
For the M's against Ian Seymour, Josh Naylor is 1 for 1 with a double. Canzone is 0 for 1. Crawford is 0 for 1. Raleigh has one plate appearance and walked, as has Cole Young.
The 1st place Rays try to end their first half by sweeping the Mariners. Ian Seymour takes the hill. The second-year lefty has been very good since shifting to the starting rotation. He's made 5 starts this season. In his last two, he's tossed 11.1 innings, allowed 8 hits, 4 earned runs, walked 1, and struck out 20. He K'd 12 Yankees in his last outing.
Overall, he has a 0.7 bWAR and a 4.11 ERA. In 61.1 innings, he's allowed 45 hits, 28 earned runs, and 9 homers, walking 21 and striking out 72.
Junior Caminero is having an MVP-caliber season with 28 homers and a .933 OPS. Jonathan Aranda has an .856 OPS and 13 homers. Yandy Diaz has an .887 OPS and 13 homers. These three bats are carrying the Rays, but they maximize their talent on the roster, letting players do what they can to help. Chandler Simpson, for example, has 22 stolen bases and 6 triples.
For the Rays against Hancock, Diaz is 2 for 2 with a double. Hunter Feduccia is 1 for 1 with a single. Simpson is 2 for 2 with 2 singles. Caminero is 1 for 2 with a single.
The Mariners have the on-paper pitching advantage with Hancock taking the hill. Seymour is still getting accustomed to being a starter even though he's been very good so far. But the M's are not hitting and Seymour racks up the strikeouts.
The Rays will continue their hot streak, take the win on Sunday, complete the sweep and leave the M's heading into the All-Star break spiraling.
